Piazza del Popolo is one of the most famous piazza in Rome. Here you will find the Obelisco Flaminio, the basilica de Santa Maria, the twin churches (Santa Maria dei Montesanto and Santa Maria dei Miracoli) and the external facade of Porta de Popoli. With so many beautiful and ancient structures, it is no wonder that Piazza del Popolo is a must see for all visitors to the city.
The name Piazza del Popolo translates in Italian to the peoples square. The Piazza is located in the northern part of the city inside the Aurelian Walls. In ancient Rome it was known as Porta Flaminia. This is the starting point to Via Flaminia which is a very important road. The the road leading north to Ariminum, modern day Rimini. Piazza del Popolo was the first place seen when travelers arrived in Rome.
Unfortunately, this was also the place where public executions took place. The last execution took place is 1826. Rameses II erected the second tallest obelisk in Rome located here. The sheer size of this Piazza is quite impressive. I can see why it was the entrance to the eternal city. This is a great spot for people watching and to take some interesting photos. While here, definitely check out the Leonardo da Vinci museum located on the northern part of the Piazza.
